Kien joined the Board in October 2024 and was re-elected in the most recent election in 2025. He is currently a member of the MVS Governance Committee.
He is a healthcare executive with over 25 years of experience in the medical device industry where he holds a BS in Genetics & Cell Biology from University of Minnesota and a MS in Microbiology from Minnesota State University – Mankato, He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from University of Colorado – Boulder, and also holds an MBA from Columbia Business School.
Kien grew up in Rochester, MN and attended public schools throughout his educational experiences. His wife Julie grew up in Marine on St. Croix and attended Marine Elementary School. She also graduated from Stillwater High School, and they met as students at University of MN over 35 years ago. They moved to Marine in 2021. He believes that great schools are critical to encourage a love of learning and provide a strong foundation for life-long learning experiences. Marine on St. Croix is their forever home, and they are committed to supporting the community. Julie currently serves as a member of the planning commission, and together they volunteer at the Marine Mills Historical Site and other civic projects. They strongly believe that Marine Village School is a critical component to the Marine community and will continue to serve an important role in the future of Marine. Kien feels that he is able to contribute to this future by serving as a community school board member.
