NOTIFICATION OF MARINE VILLAGE SCHOOL (MVS) BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION

February 27, 2026

Dear MVS Parents, Teachers, and Current Board of Directors,

Since the start of MVS in 2022, we have had an initial board of directors who have supported the building and initial growth of our school.  Each spring the board elects new members. Elections for the 2026-2029 board seats are now open. Board terms are three years. This year we are seeking 3 candidates that fall in the parent and/or community member classification. The election will take place on May 19th & 20th. Online polling will open at 8:00 AM on the 19th and close at 8:00 PM on the 20th. Constituents will receive a voting code and instructions the week before polls open. Newly elected board members will be sworn in at the June School Board meeting on June 18, 2026. Their official term will begin at the conclusion of the June 18, 2026 meeting.

Please note that once elected, new board members are required to complete and pass a background check prior to being sworn in.

 

To run for a board seat, you will need to submit your application containing the following information: 

      1. Name
      2. Contact Information (Address, Phone number, and Email address)
      3. A brief explanation stating why you are interested in a board position?
      4. What skills do you believe you would bring to the MVS school board?
      5. Which board seat classification are you applying for? (Parent/Community Member/Both)

ELECTION FAQS

  • The Marine Village School opened in September 2022. Prior to the school’s opening, an interim Board of Directors was established by charter school founders to manage the school until the end of the third full academic year of operation. 
  • Our first elected school board was seated on July 1, 2025.

Minnesota Statutes requires that charter schools be governed by a Board of Directors.

The purpose of an elementary charter school board is to provide independent governance, oversight, and accountability to ensure the school fulfills its mission and meets its legal and academic obligations.

  • Attend required trainings.
  • Become familiar with the Marine Village School Board By-Laws and Minnesota’s charter school laws.
  • Become familiar with the structure, mission, and vision of the school.
  • Review and approve strategic plans, policies, budgets, processes, and documents related to employment matters.
  • Attend monthly Board meetings (held the third Thursday of each month).
  • Participate on a working committee.
  • Volunteer at various school events.

The time commitment ranges from three to ten hours a month, depending on time of year and your role on the board.

  • Board members may not be related parties. Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3.
  • Also under Minn. Stat. 124E.07, Subd. 3, the Board must have at least
    • one (1) licensed teacher;
    • one (1) parent or legal guardian of a student enrolled in the charter school who is not an employee of the school; and
    • one interested community member (who must reside in Minnesota and not have a student enrolled in the school or be an employee of the school).
  • To serve as a licensed teacher on the charter school board, “the individual must (1) be employed by the school or provide at least 720 hours of service under a contract between the charter school and a teacher cooperative; (2) be a qualified teacher as defined under section 122A.16, either serving as a teacher of record in a field in which the individual has a field license, or providing services to students the individual is licensed to provide; and (3) not serve in an administrative or supervisory capacity for more than 240 hours in a school calendar year.” Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(b).
  • “A contractor providing facilities, goods, or services to a charter school must not serve on the board of directors. In addition, an individual is prohibited from serving as a member of the charter school board of directors if (1) the individual, an immediate family member, or the individual’s partner is a full or part owner or principal with a for-profit or nonprofit entity or independent contractor with whom the charter school contracts, directly or indirectly, for professional services, goods, or facilities; or (2) an immediate family member is an employee of the school.”  Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(e).
  • An individual may serve as a member of the Board of Directors if no conflict of interest exists. Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(e).
  • An individual is prohibited from serving on more than one charter school board at the same time in either an elected or ex-officio capacity. Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(h).
