MVS Board of Directors Election

NOTIFICATION OF MARINE VILLAGE SCHOOL (MVS) BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION

February 7, 2025

Dear MVS Parents, Teachers, and Current Board of Directors,

Since the start of MVS in 2022, we have had an initial board of directors who have supported the building and initial growth of our school.  We now need to elect ongoing directors for our school board for two and three-year terms.  The terms of the board seat will allow us to rotate in new members annually, while maintaining a core group of board members ongoing.  Our by-laws require board representations from current parents, teachers, and community members.  The election will take place in May 2025 (more details to follow) and newly elected board members will start their terms in July 2025.

Board Director seat classifications include:

MAY 2025 ELECTION FAQS

  • The Marine Village School opened in September 2022. Prior to the school’s opening, an interim Board of Directors was established by charter school founders to manage the school until the end of the third full academic year of operation, at which time Directors are to be elected.
  • May 30, 2025 will mark the end of the third full academic year of operation.

Minnesota Statutes requires that charter schools be governed by a Board of Directors.

On a macro level, the Marine Village School Board provides fair, legal, and respectful leadership by governing the operation of the school and being accountable to the community on behalf of the school. On a micro level, it establishes goals and oversees outcomes; and it sets a course for the school to achieve those goals and outcomes by establishing policies, budgets, and contracts.

  • Attend required training.
  • Become familiar with the Board By-Laws and Minnesota’s charter school laws.
  • Become familiar with the school structure, mission, and curriculum.
  • Review and approve strategic plans, policies, budgets, processes, and documents related to employment matters.
  • Attend monthly Board meetings (held the third Thursday of each month).
  • Volunteer for committee work.

There are two year terms and three year terms.

The time commitment ranges from two to five hours a month.

  • Board members may not be related parties. Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3.
  • Also under Minn. Stat. 124E.07, Subd. 3, the Board must have at least
    • one (1) licensed teacher;
    • one (1) parent or legal guardian of a student enrolled in the charter school who is not an employee of the school; and
    • one interested community member (who must reside in Minnesota and not have a student enrolled in the school or be an employee of the school).
  • To serve as a licensed teacher on the charter school board, “the individual must (1) be employed by the school or provide at least 720 hours of service under a contract between the charter school and a teacher cooperative; (2) be a qualified teacher as defined under section 122A.16, either serving as a teacher of record in a field in which the individual has a field license, or providing services to students the individual is licensed to provide; and (3) not serve in an administrative or supervisory capacity for more than 240 hours in a school calendar year.” Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(b).
  • “A contractor providing facilities, goods, or services to a charter school must not serve on the board of directors. In addition, an individual is prohibited from serving as a member of the charter school board of directors if (1) the individual, an immediate family member, or the individual’s partner is a full or part owner or principal with a for-profit or nonprofit entity or independent contractor with whom the charter school contracts, directly or indirectly, for professional services, goods, or facilities; or (2) an immediate family member is an employee of the school.”  Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(e).
  • An individual may serve as a member of the Board of Directors if no conflict of interest exists. Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(e).
  • An individual is prohibited from serving on more than one charter school board at the same time in either an elected or ex-officio capacity. Stat. § 124E.07, Subd. 3(h).
